My Finish Line Video At Zion 100

I came across a video Mel shot of me crossing the line of the Zion 100 a few months ago. As you will see, I saved up just BARELY enough energy to jump across the finish line.

NOTE TO SELF: After running 100 miles your legs will nearly collapse when you try to jump across the finish line.

This sissy jump across the finish line is a bit deceiving. It doesn't show the incredible highs and incredible lows I encountered over the previous 35 hours to run those 100 miles to the finish line. Just know that this little jump was the ending of a profound and life-changing experience.

My friend Jared Thorley ran his first 50 miler that day at Zion. Jared is a seasoned runner and skirted in 10 minutes under the cutoff. Just incredible. It goes to show how grueling these events are. He wrote afterward "Indescribable how difficult that was." A picture of him at the end summarizes everything so perfectly. You can see the indescribable challenge, indescribable pain, and indescribable exhaustion. And the indescribable sense of accomplishment!

  1. Great video and that photo is really special. I will never attempt to jump over the finish line at the end of a 100 miler :)

  2. I still can't believe you could even RUN into the finish. I've decided to start eating like I'm running an ultra, but not run one. Does that count for anything? I can imagine I'll have an indescribable sense of accomplishment when I eat this entire cake I'm baking right now.

  3. Oh My Heck! I couldn't believe how much energy you still looked like you had! I would have immediately plopped to the ground and called for a stretcher to get me to the car and home. WOW!

  4. I'll heed that warning - IF I ever run 100 miles. Well done. It's something that very few people can ever achieve.

  6. If I was coming across a 100 miler finish line, I'd be crawling and certain I wouldn't be jumping anything even remotely as high as that for about 4 months after. Well done again, Cory! So very proud of that big accomplishment!!

  7. You look tired Cory, what's up? :D I love the picture of your buddy too. Crazy thing is when you feel like that in a 100 and you have to go out for a 'second lap'!! Great job to both of you. Always nice too, to have the support of you wonderful family at the finish line.
